News: Works On LRT, PIL, PSR To Start By Q4, Says Chow

Feb 14, 2020

The state government of Penang expects construction work on the Pan Island Link (PIL), light rail transit (LRT) and Penang South Reclamation (PSR) projects to commence by the fourth quarter of 2020.

In fact, the Penang government and SRS Consortium, which is the project delivery partner, were now undertaking the project’s vetting process, reported Bernama.

“We, together with SRS Consortium, are hoping to sign the agreement for the projects (soon),” said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow following the groundbreaking ceremony for the new building of the Penang chapter of Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM).

He revealed that construction work is set to start either in 2H 2020 or in Q4 2020, while noting that the reclaimed land of Gurney Coast is expected to be ready by April.

When asked which of the three projects under the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) would start first, Chow shared that the state is still finalising the matter and that it would depend on funding.

“Whether it is one after another or all (LRT, PIL and PSR) concurrently, it will depend on the financing,” he said.

At 29.9 kilometres, the proposed LRT will have 27 stations spanning from Komtar to the Penang International Airport and includes the three future reclaimed islands within the south of Penang under PSR.

To create a landbank to finance the PTMP, the state proposes to reclaim 1,821 hectares of the sea on three man-made islands at south of Penang International Airport towards the east around Permatang Damar Laut.

The PIL1 project refers to a 19.5km-long toll-free highway alignment that start from Gurney Drive and ends at Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway. It comprises a 7.6km viaduct sections, 1.8km embankment sections and four tunnel sections totalling 10.1km.

The RM46 billion PTMP project, on the other hand, includes an undersea tunnel linking the island to the mainland, LRT, highway, monorail as well as a bus network on the island and Seberang Perai.
